Abstract
This talk outlines my ongoing theoretical project investigating the social and epistemological nature of public engagement with science and exploring the implications for science education. I will begin by reviewing the first piece of that project, the competent outsider framework, before spending the main part of the talk exploring the second component: epistemic networks. I will then foreshadow my upcoming work on the third component of the project: appropriate respect as a conceptual alternative to the idea of "trust in science." I will conclude by proposing a partial research agenda as a starting place for discussion.
