Language plays a central role in educational learning - both as a communication prerequisite, as a learning medium, and as a learning goal. It also represents a central dimension of heterogeneity. Teachers, however, often lack the time to support students with very different language learning needs on an individual basis in their language competence acquisition. Using new digital technologies, such as AI-based systems, in the context of equity and inclusion, allows us to constructively address the linguistic heterogeneity of learners.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications such as ChatGPT or DeepL are currently developing extremely dynamically and have recently made great progress in the linguistically correct translation of texts and in AI-supported machine text production. Such systems therefore have the potential to support teachers in designing individual language learning opportunities for students, for example.

Professionalization concepts are necessary to prepare teachers for a competent use of AI-based systems in school and in the classroom. This is where the KISS-Pro project comes in: It aims to develop and test professionalization concepts for the competent use of AI in teaching languages. The project combines the expertise of four universities and research institutions.

The joint project will develop target group-specific information and qualification programs that, in addition to conveying knowledge about the opportunities and potential of AI-based systems, will also address fears and reservations as well as specific, objective limits and problems of the use of AI in the school context.

The joint project specifically examines the possibilities of individual feedback for students through NLP as well as the application of intelligent tutorial systems and social robots. Reflection on the ethical, legal and social implications of the use of AI-supported systems in the school context also lies at the heart of the project.
