The latest episode of the IPN’s podcast Im Dialog features top experts discussing the potential of large language models such as ChatGPT for use in the German education system. Germany’s Standing Scientific Commission on Education Policy (SWK) has recently issued a discussion paper entitled "Large language models and their potential in the education system" containing innovative recommendations for the use of large language models (LLMs) in schools. It follows a guide to AI and schools published by Deutsche Telekom Stiftung, which offered a range of practical suggestions in this area. The new podcast episode engages with these ideas and explores the associated issues. Tune in to Jacob Chammon, managing director of Deutsche Telekom Stiftung, Ulrike Cress, a member of the SWK and director of the Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien (IWM), and the co-chair of the SWK, our very own Olaf Köller, as they shed light on potential ways of incorporating LLMs into day-to-day classroom practice and outline a strategy for driving the continued digital transformation of the education sector.
